Lot of progress in Jukeboxes - over 50 significant developments.

Not just here is a new upgrade, but here is one that brings, say CD-ROM networking along.

Only SOME vendors were able to make it. I will be calling out to audience members.

Categories.

Significant technological advances

1/ Phase change CD-ROM drive from Panasonic, Phillips 2 weeks ago

will be news worthy - help developers work the kinks out

2/ HDCD - large orgs, govt PHillips and Sonys proposals The thing that is different is they are paying attention to the needs of computer issues.

June issue Dana Parker - two axes, how alliances have approached market

Time/Warner - top down, Hollywood side down - press releases in NY, Hollywood, not much information to computer trade.

Phillips talking to people in the industry. It shows that one way high density war might break down - consumer only or day to day needs you are facing for a very large capacity disc.

Phase change from HD. Next year - some announcemnts.

THIS year:

1/ Jukeboxes.

for archiving, towers - number of companies servicing. The models. 2 dozen companies Boffen to Young Minds.

This year - 2 multidisc systems stand out Pinoneer NEw Medai, NSM

Pioneer important due to DRM500-4X jukebox - high water mark set. The capacity king. Married to 4 drives - some could be CDR drives. Basis for VAR solutiosn. Pioneer jukebox products in terrabyte range.

More than half could easily have been in another category. It is getting to be so well integrated, this may be the last year I can use the categories.

NSM - a number of things. Very good, solid reputation. That is something to note. Complex systems can be quite difficult to implement well. Expanding model line. 100SC in place for a while. 50 disc per 2 magainzes expanded to 3 magazine model.

Daisy chained up to limit of 1000 discs, almost enough to hold the US Tax Code.

2/ Network technologies. Soft of go togethe like sooup and sandwich. Networking CD roms was not always so easy. Getting easier. CDR integraation is makning advances. Certainly greater nubmers. Three vendors:

Micotest

Smart Storage

Meridian Data

Microtest - Discport Pro - 5 minute installation any where on the network. Disc ViewPro. Managing is easy. Quite impressive.

Host of new CD ROM products at Interop - shipping as of last Friday

Current ad strategy, don't just enter a vertical market with product, but build market.

1984, publically traded

45 million last year in revenues

leadming mfg for lans. Compass for diagnostics. CD-ROM connectivity product.

DiskPort Pro - in DiskPort family - amini server that can be plugged in at any place, SCSI 2 daisy chained up to 7 drives, doesn 't require server.

New one, 14 drives. New and improved - seemless mapping like a hard drive.

See table at marketplace.

CD-NOW with Novell - certified NLM for dedicated apps for CD-ROM networking.

Press - annoucement to aquire - 1986 firm - last Thursday.

= Alliance with Novell and acquisition of App Internaltional

Smart Storage - aptly named. CD-R mass storage system.

Both networking CD and networking CD-R. Have done quite a lot.

= Kirti Vashee, Smart Storage

You heard vision this morning. WE believe strongly in this vision. 2 areas - networking jukeboxes on several platforms. Novell NLMs, several UNIX, shortly Windows NT. Basically we've developed device independent architecture, any combination, all into a single logical structure. Beginning to take hold in a fairly substantial way. Not a public profile. We produce middle software. Maybe OEM front. We've been involved in OJ Simpson case. Defense put their stuff on CDs, managed by Smart.

Litigation support of Microsoft litigation. Smart has identity. We are beginning to see very large data set application. Already 2800 CDs on a single network. A patent based application - images of patent data. The evolution of this - as people put this together, you attract much larger audience. With 10 CDs it is LAN. With 3000 CDs you become a library, people from all over the world come it. Important to support PCs, Macs,. We are also beginning to see as these structures take hold - for example in patents - mechanical motor mfg might ask for all motors in last 10 years. Answer might find data from 70 CDS.

We believe use of CDR is going to grow tremendously. In the CIRC Smart Write - takes a Kodak transporter and makes it look like a laser printer. All users can send data to the same device. Our device will manage the spooling. In an automated way you can print CDs.

Also, technologies are beginning to merge. Pioneer 500 - have writers embedded. Their reading and writing technology will be housed together. We believe CD ROM industry has very bright future. Role of CD will be significant. Evolution from purely dissemination to just a digital storage space, for video, sound, whatever, will increase substantially. We have developed open systems architecture, that we believe will be a key component. We have not felt the need to publicize. We will compete with Microtest and Meridian, but we believe the future of CD ROM is in storage.

= Raised a really good point that helps bring these categories together. More and more apps of CD and CDR focussed on data storage. In the general press, people see CD ROM as a publication tool.

Meridian networked CD Recordable - its groundbreaking CD-R products, not only for products but for perseverance. Now showcasing, premiering CD NetPlus version 6. Netscribe 3.0.

The nice thing to keep in mind is that all these companies with one exception are here in the exhibit hall.

Jukeboxes - like a broken record - CDR. Improved performance, lower prices, enterprise wide environments.

Corel - I'll say this, CD Creator is either a hero or a villan - end users like this.

CD Premastering market may not be that happy today. CD Corel has changed pricing points.

The good news in that Corel is creating a larger market. There is not a Corel representative here.

The other is Young Minds, Inc. Here is a perfect example, Jukeboxes, VAR, Premastering, CDR support, networks. Young Minds could have gone into any of these categories.

4/ CD ROM on-line hybrids.

This is rather new. Examples,

Metatech's Nautilus magazine - CD/Online hybrid Disc had software to link to Bulletin Board. Submit letter to editor.

Probably most well known is Microsoft Baseball - Intermedia '94 announcement. Baseball strike didn't help.

What we've been missing is means for disc/CD-ROM to transparently link to online environment.

Teleshow out of New York is the first company to do this

Vista Intermedia working with Teleshow.

= It is necessary to say that, I make this personal, as a lawyer, I thought this was a tremendous business opportunity. Got disk December 31. Today is May 22. Genesis of hybrid activity - update CDs through teleshow, software and service support. Update files from any publisher. Put on server - anybody's server. Imbeded on CD is software that allows the modem to dial up that server - and dailing up though Windows Update command, downloads one dubmp of data. User with search software iwll have pointers to hard disk as well as on CD ROM, supplemented or refresshed.

New cycle, new CD. Hard drive will be wiped. New cycle starts.

From the point of view of doing a search, it is seamless. Works with Folio. License on own server OR use Teleshow's server.

As publisher of legal and health care discs, being updated by Teleshuttle service.

Consumer item - blockbuster has just started up with CD of movie reviews and is using teleshuttle to update the CD - launching in 2-3 weeks from now. At same time we are trying in business world. We will do DOS and other platforms. Format is almost irrelevant. Think of it as a transport software.

Some competition with Internet - only 5% of people with modems are using Internet.

Added market share of 95% over Internet.

Demo on Wed AM - at CD-ROM early bird.

= What we are seeing here is the industry maturing around huge amounts of data

middle sized runs, getting it out on networks

Hybrid discs - weakness - static data - being married quite effectively with on-line strength.

Blockbuster will be service - interesting experiment.

Legal, researchers - incredibly cheap storage of CD, married to relatively expensive online, just need little touch for update.

Reception starting at 6. Thank you for coming.
